Overview and Coverage
Our comprehensive Japanese lexical resources currently contain approximately three million entries, covering general vocabulary, technical terminology and proper nouns such as personal names and company names. This document describes our Katakana Lexical Database (KLD), which contains about 50,000 entries, mostly loanwords and other kinds of words written in katakana, with various grammatical attributes. The number of katakana words in Japanese, especially technical terms, has increased dramatically in recent years. KLD is already playing a vital role in enhancing the accuracy of various NLP applications such as machine translation (MT), information retrieval (IR) and morphological analyzers. For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended to supplement KLD with our Japanese Orthographical Database (JOD) and our one-million entry Japanese-English Dictionary of Technical Terms.

Description of Selected Fields
1	HEADWORD	Japanese word in katakana orthography.
2	HIRAGANA	Reading in hiragana.
3	POS	Part of speech code. See jappos.htm for POS code definitions.
4	TYPE	A subclassification that identifies semantic properties of the headword or supplementary information such grammatical attributes. See cpostype .htm for TYPE code definitions.
5	RANKING	Number indicating a ranking based on frequency statistics (not shown in this sample).
6	HEPBURN	Reading in Hepburn romanization (macrons shown by "_").
7	ENGLISH	English equivalent for a large number of headwords (not shown in sample).
